When colour patent drawings can help
Colour can distinguish components, clarify layered assemblies or make a technical image easier to interpret. Greyscale can help present tonal information where a simple outline is insufficient. The aim is clear technical communication, with visual choices guided by your invention and filing instructions.

Understand the EPO filing route
For eligible Euro-direct applications filed electronically on or after 1 October 2025, the EPO accepts drawings in colour or greyscale. This does not extend colour use to the description, claims or abstract.
PCT international-phase practice differs. For Euro-PCT entry, use of the original colour drawings depends on specific conditions, including their availability on PATENTSCOPE and the publication notice. Adding colour to an existing application may also raise added-matter questions.

Can you simply colour an existing black-and-white drawing?
We first need to understand the application status and original disclosure. A colour change can affect technical meaning. Share the original figures and your patent professional’s instructions before requesting changes.
What should I send with my order?
Include your source files, intended filing route, estimated sheets or figures, preferred output format and target date. If the application is already filed, say so in your enquiry.
Is the price per sheet or per project?
The price is $29 per drawing sheet. Quantity means the number of sheets: 3 sheets cost $87 and 5 sheets cost $145, before any applicable taxes. Confirm the required sheet count with our team if you are unsure.
