What counts as a sheet
Your patent drawing cost is based on drawing sheets, not individual figures. A sheet is one page in the drawing set. It may hold more than one figure when the layout and applicable drawing requirements allow it. A front view, a detail view and an exploded view are figures; they do not automatically represent three separately priced sheets.
Under 37 CFR 1.84(f), USPTO drawing sheets use A4 (21.0 by 29.7 cm) or US letter (21.6 by 27.9 cm). All drawing sheets in an application must be the same size. The available drawing area also depends on the required margins. Ask us to review the proposed views and layout before estimating your order from a figure list.
What affects your total
The number of sheets is the starting point. The views needed to explain the subject help determine that count. Utility drawings may need sectional, exploded or detail views to show a mechanism. Design drawings present the appearance of the article through a consistent set of views. Agree the required disclosure with your patent practitioner before finalizing the drawing brief.
The completeness of your sketches, CAD files or photographs also matters when defining the work. Identify the latest version, explain the parts and mark any details that must appear. If references conflict or a view is missing, we may need clarification before confirming the scope. Request a quote for the actual project rather than treating figure count as a sheet count.
What is included
Revisions to the agreed drawing scope are included. Send consolidated comments with figure numbers and clear change instructions. New subject matter, additional sheets or a substantial change to the invention may change the scope; ask the team to confirm before proceeding.
A confidentiality agreement is available on request. Ask before sharing detailed technical materials, or send your proposed NDA for review. Final sheets are delivered electronically in the format agreed for the project. Tell us before work starts if you need a particular PDF specification, image format or editable source file so we can confirm the deliverables and any additional preparation.
How it works
1. Send your references. Share sketches, CAD files or photographs with the application type, target office, required views and deadline. Ask for a confidentiality agreement first if you need one. Explain which reference version controls the work.
2. Confirm the quote. Receive a quote based on the sheet count and agreed scope. If the number of sheets is uncertain, ask us to review the materials before ordering. Confirm the project schedule and any additional services with the team.
3. Review the draft. Check the drawings against your references with the inventor and patent practitioner. Review shapes, labels and consistency across views. Send one consolidated list of revisions within the agreed scope, identified by figure and reference number.
4. Receive the final drawings. After draft approval, receive the completed sheets in the agreed electronic format for your filing team. Allow time for its final review before the filing deadline.
Sample drawings
Examine the line work, reference numerals and appearance views in these existing PDE samples. Use them to describe the kind of illustration you need; the samples do not determine the sheet count for your invention.
